Blogs and Wikis
March 23, 2007 by jzcolby
Held a 30-minute workshop on Blogs at my school. The purpose was to give a visual on blogs, show some educational blogs, how to find good blogs, how to comment on a blog, and some guidelines to follow when creating and/or using a blog in education. Had a good turnout. At least 1/2 of the classroom teachers attended and I believe that all left having a good understanding of the “blogging” world.
A week later, I held a similar workshop for Wikis. Again, well attended and many of the teachers commented that they now know the difference between a blog and a wiki.
As a result of the 30 minute sessions, we will now be having two workhsop (10 hours) for PDPs to learn how to create a blog or a wiki. I already have several teachers signed up for both workshops. This workshop will be very similar to what Beth Knittle is doing for Barnstable district. She has completed the blog workhsop and is currently doing a wiki workshop (which I am attending and it was GREAT).
It is fun looking back where I was a year ago and I was just starting to learn about blogs and wikis. Technology changes so much from year to year and there is always something to learn that puts a whole new “spin” on teaching.

Julia, maybe we should make a wiki of all the wikis being done in the greater district.

Great idea Beth. It would be great to have the listing on the District website and then I can link to that page from my web site. I have told the teachers when they feel comfortable with their blog/wiki, let me know and I will put a link on our web site. I am hoping to see several wikis go up at our school.

Julia,
I’ve been looking through your blog – it has so much fabulous information. I am excited to have the workshop you are offering our staff and see how to develop categories, pages, etc. Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful, informational blog.

Hi MJ,
I am glad you brought up “pages.” I hadn’t really given too much thought to pages — was thinking more about posting and commenting along with categories. But, you are right, I need to think about showing you pages also.
